5 Unexpected Benefits of Cannabis

Growing Cannabis is generally prohibited due to its leaves being utilized for substance abuse in many places. However, this controversial plant is slowly starting to gain favor in many countries and some states in the US.

5 Unexpected Benefits of Cannabis

In fact, aside from being legal, Cannabis is now being farmed in selected countries because of its unexpected benefits. Here are some of them.

Decreases anxiety

In controlled amounts, Cannabis can work as a mild sedative, slowly relieving anxiety in the process. Because of this effect, it can help improve the mood and provide a pleasurable sensation. One strain that is often used to aid those suffering from anxiety and depression is Green Crack

Slows down cancer

According to a published study in the Molecular Cancer Therapeutics journal, a known component in Cannabis, Cannabidiol, can turn off the expression of a cancer-associated gene in cells called Id-1. This was proven through experiments on breast cancer cells in the lab where the samples were treated with varying but controlled concentrations of Cannabidiol.

Apparently, marijuana decreases Id-1 expression and the aggressive spreading of these cancer cells. In fact, separate studies support that marijuana also slows downs growth of tumors in the brain, breast, and lungs.

Prevents Alzheimer’s Disease

Another active ingredient in Cannabis known as THC was discovered to have a positive effect on Alzheimer’s patients. According to the research done by Scripps Research Institute, THC slows down the formation of amyloid plaques (which destroy nerve cell connections) by directly affecting the enzymes in the brain that manufacture these plaques.

Controls epileptic seizures

Apparently, this same THC that slows down amyloid plaques are also associated with regulating relaxation and excitability in the brain. In fact, in a study on epileptic rodents, it was discovered that marijuana extracts containing THC were successful in stopping seizures for about 10 hours.

Treats glaucoma

Another unexpected benefit of Cannabis is its positive effect on glaucoma. According to studies, smoking Cannabis surprisingly lowers the pressure in the eyeball thereby preventing injury to the optic nerve and blindness.
